Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine

WHAT IS MOUNTAIN CULTURE?

Kootenay Mountain Culture is an international-calibre biannual publication dedicated to the celebration, promotion and documentation of mountain culture as it exists throughout British Columbia’s Kootenay region, an emerging tourism market in a province fast becoming the 21st century’s premier outdoor adventure destination.

Mountain culture is a growing global subculture found in mountainous regions around the world that are famous for geographical grandeur and active, eclectic lifestyles. Like cultures of any stripe, mountain culture is defined by its history, sport, politics, art and entertainment, as well as its icons, entrepreneurial spirit, industrial endeavours and spirituality.

OUR VISION

Kootenay Mountain Culture's (KMC) editorial focus is on stories and images relating to all aspects of mountain culture: issues relevant to local residents, first-time or lifelong visitors to the southeastern corner of British Columbia, as well as anyone in the world who embraces the lifestyles, passions and pastimes synonymous with mountain landscapes.

At the same time, we aim to capitalize on an empty niche in the regional, national and international magazine market, and the extraordinary opportunities presented by the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics—very likely the largest international exposure the province, and the nation, will ever experience.

A PLACE UNLIKE ANY OTHER

Sprawling across an incredible mountainous landscape larger than Switzerland, the Kootenays are located in the southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, bordering the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana and the Canadian province of Alberta.

In climate, culture and year-round holiday adventure opportunity, this relatively undiscovered region is unlike any other in the world.

The Kootenays encompass portions of four major mountain ranges: the western Rockies, Purcells, Selkirks and eastern Monashees, and within these ranges are hundreds of lakes, rivers, glaciers and 10,000-foot peaks. The region includes four national parks, 75 provincial parks, and countless year-round, winter and summer recreation resorts, backcountry lodges, hot springs, championship golf courses and far-out destinations renown for world-class hiking, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, mountain biking and climbing.

Kootenay communities like Golden, Fernie, Nelson, Rossland, Kimberly and Revelstoke are rapidly becoming recognized as having some of the planet’s most outstanding and untouched mountain wilderness.

The region is served by two main airports, in Cranbrook and Castlegar, and three major highways, including the world-famous Trans-Canada Highway through Rogers Pass.
